چکیده

Until recently there has been no demonstrated case in Neurospora in which the loss of activity of an essential enzyme could be attributed to gene mutation. It has been assumed from indirect evidence1 that gene mutations do cause such losses and thereby result in “blocks” of essential biochemical reactions. The products of the “blocked” reactions thus become essential growth substances for the mutants. The first success in obtaining direct evidence to support the above assumption has been attained by Wagner and Guirard2 in studies on the enzymatic synthesis of pantothenic acid by cell-free extracts of Neurospora.

A quantitative study of the relationship between tryptophan and niacin in Neurospora.

Numerous studies elucidating the probable pathway of tryptophan synthesis (1,2) and of niacin synthesis (3-9) in Neurospora have been reported. That tryptophan may serve as a precursor of niacin was first suggested by the results of nutritional studies with mammals (10, 11). This relationship has been confirmed for the rat by tracer experiments (12). A tryptophan-niacin relationship has also be...

The enzymatic conversion of 5-dehydroshikimic acid to protocatechuic acid.

Previous studies of the physiology of an aromatic-deficient mutant strain of Neurospora crassa, Y7655a (1, 2), have led to the following conclusions: (a) The biosynthesis of the aromatic rings of phenylalanine, tyrosine, tryptophan and p-aminobenzoic acid proceeds in Neurospora as it does in Escherichia coli (3) via 5-dehydroshikimic acid and shikimic acid. (b) Protocatechuic acid, the major co...

Changes in Enzymatic Constitution in Zinc-deficient

The necessity of a metal ion for the activity or synthesis of specific enzymes may be revealed by growing the organism under conditions of the metal deficiency and comparing its enzyme systems with those of normal tissue. Waring and Werkman (1) reported that iron deficiency in Aerobatter indologenes resulted in the suppression of a number of enzymes. Zinc deficiency results in increased acid pr...

Synthesis of Aromatic Compounds by Neurospora.

Increasing insight into the biosynthesis of aromatic substances has been obtained during the past few years primarily through the study of mutant strains of microorganisms,1 and by the use of isotopic carbon.2 Shikimic acid, reported to be involved in the biosynthesis of the aromatic amino acids and of p-aminobenzoic acid by Neurospora3 and Escherichia coli, has been shown to be derived in E. c...

Bioconversion and Enzymatic Activities of Neurospora Sitophila Grown Under Solid State and Submerged Fermentation on Sago Hamps (RESEARCH NOTE)

N.sitophila was grown under controlled conditions of solid state and submerged fermentation on Sago hampas. The optimum conditions of protein enrichment previously established for sugar beet pulp was used for this study. Under this condition the protein content of Sago hampas under solid state increased from 1.4 to 14.45% (W/W) whereas for Sago hampas and Sago starch, the protein content under ...
